Assisted Living
Assisted Living Nursing is for people who need
assistance with their day to day activities but do not wish to live in
a nursing home or center. This service is like a half way point between
nursing homes and living independently. People who opt for this service
are not able to live independently and yet do not need to live in a
completely supervised environment. If one or both your parents are not
able to cope with living on their own, yet are insistent on maintaining
their independence, this is an option worth exploring.
Residents
in these facilities are given assistance with a plethora of daily
activities such as eating, bathing, dressing, housekeeping, laundry and
assistance with medication. Some centers also offer basic medical care,
though it will be in no way comparable to those offered by a nursing
home.
Once a member of your family is admitted into the facility,
the facility normally drafts a personalized service plan of assistance
required by the resident and guaranteed by the facility. This plan is
updated on a frequent basis as the resident's needs or condition
changes. It is important to keep in mind that this service is not for
elderly people with severe medical conditions, it is however for
elderly people who are able to care for themselves barring a few
activities.
The cost of assisted living nursing varies depending
on the facility and the services required and offered. When choosing a
facility it is advisable to involve your parents in the decision making
process. Keep in mind their likes and dislikes, take them to visit the
facility first to see what it's like, look for a good balance of
quality and cost, and most importantly take the time to help your
parents and loved ones understand the reasons for them moving into this
arrangement.
It may also be a great idea to opt for a facility
that is not too far away from you and the rest of your family, so that
you can visit them often and include them easily in family functions
and get-togethers. This way, you are also easily reachable in case of
an emergency.
Change of this magnitude can be very scary for
elderly people, or it can give them a feeling of being unwanted or
unloved. In this case it is a good idea to ask a social worker to visit
them and explain the benefits of this arrangement and answer any
questions they might have.
It may be hard on you too and your
family to opt for this arrangement but often assisted living nursing is
the best and right thing for you to do in order to take care of your
loved ones.
